5 Warning Signs Your Furnace Might Be on the Brink of Breaking Down

The cold season is here, and while it may be a time for cozy sweaters and hot cocoa, it can also bring about some common plumbing problems. The extreme temperatures during this time of year can cause issues with your pipes and plumbing system, leading to costly repairs if not dealt with promptly. This guide will discuss the most common plumbing problems during the cold months and provide tips on preventing and dealing with them.

Clogged Toilets

Clogged toilets are among the most common plumbing problems in the cold months. The decrease in temperature can cause grease and other debris to solidify, making them more difficult to flush properly. Avoid pouring cooking oil or fats down your sink to prevent this, as they can solidify and clog your pipes. You can also use a plunger to unclog your toilet, but if the problem persists, it is best to call a professional clogged toilet repair.

Frozen Pipes

Another common issue during cold months is frozen pipes. When temperatures drop below freezing, the water in your pipes can freeze and expand, causing them to burst. To prevent this from happening, insulate any exposed pipes in your home. If you notice that your pipes are frozen, do not try to thaw them yourself, as it can cause further damage. Instead, call a licensed plumber to thaw and repair the pipes safely.

Leaky Faucets

Leaky faucets are not only annoying but can also lead to an increase in your water bill. The cold weather can cause seals and gaskets to shrink, causing leaks. Regularly check for leaks and replace worn-out parts as soon as possible. If you are unsure how to fix a leaky faucet, it is best to call a professional plumber who can identify and solve it.

Burst Water Heater

A burst water heater can be a nightmare in the cold months. The drop in temperature can cause the water inside the tank to expand, putting pressure on the tank and increasing the risk of it bursting. To prevent this from happening, make sure to drain and flush your water heater regularly. If you notice any signs of a leak or hear strange noises coming from your water heater, call a professional plumber immediately.

Septic Tank Issues

Cold temperatures can also affect your septic tank, causing it to freeze and become clogged. To prevent this, ensure your septic tank is inspected and pumped regularly by a professional. Avoid pouring harsh chemicals down your drains, as they can kill the beneficial bacteria in your septic tank that helps break down waste.

By following these tips and being proactive about maintaining your plumbing system, you can prevent and deal with common plumbing problems in the cold months. However, if you encounter a severe issue you cannot handle, it is always best to call a licensed plumber for assistance. Don’t let plumbing problems ruin your winter season – take the necessary precautions and enjoy a warm and stress-free home all year round.
